About Us

About UsLast year a few RN’s started the process of trying to get a Union in our small Northwest New Jersey hospital. Those of us opposed joined forces as an Anti-union grass roots group, N.O.V.A., Nurses Own Voice Advocates. Many of our members have worked in several unionized hospitals and we have never seen patient advocacy by the union, quite the opposite. The ‘bargaining’ done by the union always comes down to one item, the money.

What we couldn't understand was that while most of us, (NOVA members), were newer to our hospital, we decided to work here for all the same reasons: the location, the atmosphere of the hospital, the equally competitive wages and benefits to other hospitals we had previously worked. Ironically, most of same issues the “pro-unionists” were complaining about. (See How Did We Get Here)

During our campaigning, we noticed how everything became about the RN's. Suddenly all the nurses were wearing large RN badges in addition to the hospital issued badge everyone wore. It was said to be for patient safety however, if this was true, we believe all the Para-professionals and ancillary staff would also be identified the same manor. Everyone who encounters a patient, visitor, or another staff member should be able to be identified as easily as the RN’s. While we are proud of being RN's we are equally as proud of all our non-nursing colleagues when a patient comments on our clean facility, the efficiency of the transporters or the quality of their food.

Therefore, we restructured into NOVAdvocates for Healthcare workers, (HOVA didn't work!). Don't misunderstand, our primary goal is to become union-free again but if we can help direct one of coworkers along the way with some of the assistance we have seen available along our journey we would be happy to address their issues also.
